Tanzanian breakout star of Singeli, DJ Travella hits Cheltenham for a 200 BPM coronation march.
Honestly, this is unlike anything you’ll have seen or heard in Cheltenham, or probably beyond. The twenty year old producer, born Hamadi Hassani, has reinvented the high-speed Tanzanian dance music sound, Singeli, and is signed to the renowned Nyege Nyege label, based in Kampala. Pitchfork says Travella ‘is as much about the spiritual connection between producer and laptop as it is the dancefloor’, and his live set is semi-improvised performance, semi-DJ set that merges earworm synth hooks with neck snapping East African rhythms.
With Boiler Room and Primavera sets under his belt last year, not to mention billing alongside Hyperdub founder Kode9 in Bristol before he hits GL51, it’s a genuine thrill to have him here.
Not to be missed, this will be memorable.
