Steady Rolling Strata landing Nationwide November 10th
Steady rolling Strata is an interpretation of our most important beer- Steady Rolling Man. The base recipe is the same as for Steady; plenty of oats, NEIPA water profile and a fruity English ale yeast. We switch out all of the usual hop additions for Strata as a showcase of this amazing variety from Indie Hops. We use bang fresh Strata that Theo selected during hop harvest this September.
We feel the recipe for Steady Rolling Man recipe is somewhat sacred. However we thought Strata was well worthy of making an exception and it's really interesting to be able to taste aspects of our most beloved beer in the context of a different hop variety.
Our introduction to Strata was during our 2019 trip to the pacific northwest for hop selection. It was an amazing trip as it was the first time we had the opportunity to go to the US to choose batches of hops. Pretty much every brewery taproom and bar we visited (a few mind) had a Strata beer on tap. Every few years there is a new hop variety that becomes available to brewers and makes big waves. Cascade, Citra, Mosaic etc, and it seemed pretty obvious to us when tasting these beers that Strata was set to be big. This trip gave us a bit of a sneak preview as to what was in the pipeline for the UK brewers as new US varieties are pretty much always released to the US market before we can get our hands on them.
The hop character of these Strata beers had something intense in common, although obviously each brewery had put their own spin on it. We all commented how orangey they were, the aroma was putting us in mind of freshly squeezed orange juice with a some lemon and mango floating nicely on the top. It also had a really nice dank bass note, not intrusive, rather the perfect counterpoint to all the juice, making the fruit flavours sing.
It's a privilege to be able to work with Indie Hops (and Loughran Brewers Select) each year on projects like this. They always have their fingers on the pulse and something exciting up their sleeves. We feel with their help, particularly during selection, that Steady Rolling Strata has outdone itself with each iteration.
